For example, advancing your understanding of some lore requires experimentation. The game sets up ample opportunites for the player to be as evil as they want to be through there being multiple ways to have anything happen.

There's a lot of ways to fail, basically.īut once you work out how to function as a human being, the cultists can be sent on expeditions, to kidnap people, steal from places, destroy evidence, or just murder the police. Beyond that, there's more existential threats like losing your sanity to dread or becoming so enraptured with the truth of the world that you can no longer determine what is actually real and become non-functional. Sometimes your actions generate mystique and notoriety, which will get you investigated and eventually have you and/or your followers thrown in prison if not managed. You need money to live, but it's hard to balance a job and cult activity. Your biggest priority at all times is to keep yourself alive. Ultimately the game is a management simulator, and that works best with the card-based layout. Eventually some in depth (albeit badly played) early game gameplay convinced me, and I was not dissapointed.įor those who don't know, Cultist Simulator places you in the role of someone who starts accidentally learning about the horrible truths of the world (often lead in by your previous character in some way in runs after your first) and dives headfirst into building a cult and trying to ascend beyond mortal limitations.
